1. Check the basics first
Before you buy chickens:
Local laws: Some cities limit the number of chickens or ban roosters.
Space: Plan for
4 sq ft per chicken inside the coop
8–10 sq ft per chicken outside (run or yard)
2. Start with the right chickens
For beginners, choose calm, hardy breeds:
Great starter breeds
🥚 Rhode Island Red – tough, friendly, great egg layers
🥚 Plymouth Rock – calm and cold-hardy
🥚 Australorp – excellent egg production
🥚 Isa Brown – super reliable layers
👉 Start with 3–6 hens (skip roosters unless you want chicks or don’t mind noise).
3. Coop essentials (keep it simple)
Your chickens need:
Dry, well-ventilated coop (no drafts)
Roosting bars (they sleep off the ground)
Nesting boxes (1 box for every 3–4 hens)
Predator protection (hardware cloth, not chicken wire!)
Tip: Bigger is always better. Chickens get cranky when cramped.
4. Feeding & water
Feed
Food scraps and top up with commercial feed (if needed) (starter, grower, or layer depending on age)
Add grit if they don’t free-range
Offer calcium (crushed oyster shells) for strong eggs
Water
Clean, fresh water every day
Keep it from freezing in winter or overheating in summer
🍓 Treats are fun (veggie scraps, fruit, mealworms), but keep them to <10% of their diet.
5. Daily & weekly care
Daily
Check food and water
Quick health check (alert, eating, walking normally)
Collect eggs 🥚
Weekly
Clean droppings
Replace bedding (pine shavings or straw)
Check for mites or lice
6. Keep them healthy
Healthy chickens are:
Active and curious
Bright-eyed
Smooth feathers
Red flags 🚩:
Lethargy
Bald patches
Runny poop
Not laying suddenly
Prevent problems by:
Keeping the coop clean
Avoiding overcrowding
Quarantining new chickens for 2 weeks
7. Common beginner mistakes (avoid these!)
❌ Too small a coop❌ Poor predator protection❌ Overfeeding treats❌ Getting roosters accidentally❌ Not planning for winter/summer weather
8. Bonus: Why chickens are awesome
Fresh eggs (way better than store-bought)
Natural pest control
Easy compost helpers
Weirdly soothing to watch 😄
